Every few years, a refinery or an FPSO stops on purpose to inspect, repair and improve what cannot be dealt with during operation, with hundreds of people working at the same time and a huge cost for every day offline. In this advanced course, you follow the team of the fictitious Refinaria Litoral Norte and a partial shutdown on the FPSO Horizonte Azul: the role of turnarounds, the cost of lost production and the risks of the transient shutdown and startup phases; risk-based scope selection, scope freeze and long-term milestones; work packs, the critical path, the budget and long-lead materials, with a spreadsheet exercise; the contracting strategy, organisation and contractor management, including offshore logistics; safety controls during execution, from isolations to the pre-startup safety review (PSSR); and execution control and the post-turnaround review. Aligned with the CCPS guidelines for transient operations (2021) and ISO 55001:2024. A theory course: it does not replace certified practical training in isolations, confined spaces, gas testing or lifting operations. The course is delivered in Portuguese.

• Identify the safety controls for shutdown and startup, including isolations, confined spaces, hot work, lifting, simultaneous operations and PSSR.
• Control the execution of a turnaround and run the post-turnaround review.
