Recommended prerequisite: SST-101 Workplace Safety Induction (HSE Induction)
In a confined space the air can kill without colour, without smell and without warning, and many of the victims are colleagues who went in to help. In this theory course for workers, standby attendants and supervisors, you follow a team from a fictitious industrial maintenance company at a fuel depot, in a sewer network and in a mine silo. Learn to recognise a confined space and its atmospheric and physical hazards, with registration and signage of the spaces. Understand oxygen deficiency and enrichment, flammable gases (LEL) and toxic gases (H2S, CO), the order of testing, testing at several heights, the bump test, continuous monitoring and ventilation. Learn about the entry permit, isolations (blind flanges and energy lockout), an introduction to respiratory protective equipment and the roles of the entrant, the standby attendant and the entry supervisor. Finally, see how standby attendance and planned rescue work, with priority given to non-entry rescue. Aligned with the British HSE approved code of practice on confined spaces (L101) and the NFPA 350 guide. This course is theoretical and does not replace certified practical training (entry, standby attendance, gas detectors, respiratory protective equipment and rescue). The course is delivered in Portuguese.
