In the first minutes after an accident or a sudden illness, what a colleague does can change everything. This theory module prepares you to make the scene safe, assess the casualty, call the emergency services and take the first steps for bleeding, wounds, burns, fractures, fainting, seizures, stroke and hypoglycaemia. Based on international first aid and resuscitation principles (ILCOR, the European Resuscitation Council and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies), it includes decision scenarios, interactive activities and support materials for the workplace. Important: this course is theoretical and does not replace certified practical training in first aid and basic life support. The course is delivered in Portuguese.

What you will learn

  • Describe the first aider's role and the sequence of action: scene safety, casualty assessment, raising the alarm and giving aid.
  • Explain how to call the emergency services and what information to give.
  • Describe the primary assessment of consciousness, airway and breathing, and identify when to place the casualty in the recovery position or start basic life support.
  • Describe the first steps for bleeding, wounds and burns.
  • Recognise fractures, fainting, seizures, stroke and hypoglycaemia and describe the right initial response.
  • Explain why certified practical training is needed and how to organise the first aid kit and incident records.
