How is an oil well built, from the first metre to first production? In this course for professionals and candidates for the oil sector and for suppliers, you follow a trainee drilling engineer during the construction of a fictitious deepwater production well tied back to a floating production unit. Learn about the types of well and rig, the five systems of a drilling rig and the roles of the crew on board. Understand the well programme, the hole sections and sizes, bits and the drill string, directional drilling and measurement while drilling. Relate the functions of the mud to pressure control, calculate hydrostatic pressure and interpret the operating window between pore pressure and fracture pressure. See how casing and cementing isolate zones and create barriers throughout the well life cycle, with integrity tests and the lessons of the Macondo case. Finally, in a guided case, choose the elements of a completion: perforating, sand control, production tubing, packer, safety valve and Christmas tree. Aligned with ISO 16530-1:2017 and API Std 65-2. A theory course: it does not replace the rig induction or the training and certification required to work in a drilling crew. The course is delivered in Portuguese.
What you will learn
- Describe the types of well and rig, the systems of a drilling rig and the roles of the crew on board.
- Explain the well programme, the drilling phases and hole sizes, and the principles of directional drilling and measurement while drilling.
- Relate the functions of the drilling fluid to well pressure control and calculate hydrostatic pressure.
- Interpret the operating window between pore pressure and fracture pressure and recognise the risks of losses and influxes.
- Explain how casing and cementing isolate zones and create well barriers throughout the life cycle.
- In a guided case, choose the elements of a completion for a deepwater production well.
