Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is one of the most treacherous hazards in the oil and gas industry: it is invisible, heavier than air and, at high concentrations, it stops smelling before it can knock a worker down in seconds. This theory module explains where H2S comes from, how it behaves, how it affects the body at different concentrations, how fixed and personal detectors work, which respiratory protective equipment is suitable and the correct response to a release: alarm, escape upwind, muster point and rescue by trained personnel only. Based on international industry good practice (IOGP, API and recognised training programmes), it includes decision scenarios and interactive exercises. This course prepares you for certified practical training but does not replace it. The course is delivered in Portuguese.
What you will learn
- Describe the properties of hydrogen sulphide and the situations in which it may be present.
- Explain why your nose is not a reliable way of detecting H2S.
- Relate H2S concentration to its effects on the body and interpret exposure limit concepts.
- Identify the detectors, alarms and respiratory protective equipment used against H2S and the rules for using them correctly.
- Apply the response sequence to an H2S release, including escaping upwind and the rule that only trained, protected personnel carry out a rescue.
