Recommended prerequisite: SST-107 Hazardous Substances: Labelling and Safety Data Sheets
A water bottle filled with degreaser, an open solvent tank, a welder without extraction: chemical risks are in plain sight, but their effects often appear years later. In this course for supervisors, HSE technicians and warehouse and laboratory managers, you follow the building of a hazardous substances control programme at a fictitious mining company, with a maintenance workshop, a laboratory, a warehouse and a fuel depot. Link the label and the safety data sheet to a control programme and learn the routes of entry and the acute and chronic effects of fuels, solvents, acids, cement, silica, welding fumes and hydrogen sulphide. Draw up a chemical inventory and a safety data sheet file, and assess exposure: who, how, for how long and to what amount, with an introduction to control banding, to exposure limits set by the applicable law and to when to measure. Select controls using the hierarchy: elimination, substitution, closed systems, local exhaust ventilation and its verification, administrative controls, hygiene and personal protective equipment chosen from the data sheet, including gloves and respiratory protection with fit testing. Organise storage by compatibility, with secondary containment, flammables cabinets and labels on secondary containers, internal transport, spill response and hazardous waste. Finally, integrate health surveillance, training, records and audit, in an integrated case. Aligned with ILO Convention No. 170, the ILO code of practice on chemicals and the United Nations GHS. Includes downloadable templates: inventory and exposure assessment in Excel, guides on controls, gloves and respiratory protection, a compatibility table, a spill plan and a training matrix. The course is delivered in Portuguese.
