Recommended prerequisite: SST-102 Fire Prevention and Firefighting: The Basics
A spark from a grinder can travel several metres and smoulder unseen for hours; an "empty" drum can explode at the first cut; and welding fumes are classified as carcinogenic. In this theory course for welders, permit issuers, fire watchers and supervisors, you follow a team from a fictitious maintenance company at a fuel terminal and in a mine workshop. Identify the fire, explosion and health risks of welding, cutting, grinding and torch work: sparks and slag, "empty" containers, flammable atmospheres, fumes, radiation, electric shock and compressed gases. Learn to plan and authorise hot work: cold work alternatives, removing or protecting combustibles within an 11 m radius, fire blankets, gas testing, cleaning and purging, and hazardous areas (introduction). Apply the controls during the work: fire watch, gas cylinders, hoses and flashback arrestors, welder's PPE and fume extraction. Finally, finish safely, with a fire watch after the work ends, a final inspection and closure of the permit, and learn from illustrative cases. Aligned with NFPA 51B and the IOGP Life-Saving Rules. Includes a preparation checklist, a fire watch sheet and a permit template. This course is theoretical and does not replace certified practical training. The course is delivered in Portuguese.
What you will learn
- Identify the fire, explosion and health risks of the different hot work processes.
- Explain why sparks, "empty" containers and flammable atmospheres make hot work dangerous.
- Explain the planning and authorisation of hot work, starting with cold work alternatives.
- Describe the preparation of the area: combustibles within an 11 m radius, blankets, openings, gas testing, cleaning and purging.
- Apply the controls during the work, including the fire watch, gas cylinders, welder's PPE and fume extraction.
- Complete hot work safely, with a fire watch after the work ends, a final inspection and closure of the permit, and recognise the limits of a theory course.
