What happens to oil and gas between the wellhead and the tanker or the gas pipeline? In this intermediate course, you follow Kiala, a new production operator on board the FPSO Horizonte Azul, a fictitious deepwater floating unit, and work through the whole surface process. Learn about the produced fluids (oil, gas, water, sand, CO2 and H2S) and production systems onshore, on fixed platforms, on FPSOs and subsea, and read the overall flow diagram of a facility. Understand how two-phase and three-phase separators work, pressure stages, level and pressure control, slugging, foam, emulsions and sand. Describe crude dehydration, desalting and stabilisation and the treatment of produced water with hydrocyclones and flotation. Explain compression, gas dehydration with glycol and the destinations of associated gas, and make a decision in a guided case. Finally, relate utilities and safety systems (process and emergency shutdown, blowdown, flare, fire and gas detection and safety analysis aligned with API RP 14C) to stable operation. Includes downloadable flow diagrams, fact sheets and exercises. The course is delivered in Portuguese.

What you will learn

  • Describe the produced fluids, production systems and the overall flow diagram of a processing facility.
  • Explain how separators work, level and pressure control and the typical problems in separation.
  • Describe the treatment of crude oil to export specification and the treatment of produced water.
  • Explain gas compression and dehydration and, in a case, choose the destination of associated gas.
  • Relate utilities and process safety systems to stable and safe operation.
  • Interpret the main process variables and recognise when a situation requires control room intervention.
