How many barrels does a field hold? It depends on how certain we are, on whether there is a project to produce them and on whether that project is commercial. In this advanced course, you follow the reserves team of the fictitious operator Atlântico Sul Petróleos and learn to classify resources and reserves in line with the PRMS (2018 revision): what classification is for and who uses it; reserves, contingent resources and prospective resources, with the chance of discovery and of development; the 1P/2P/3P and 1C/2C/3C uncertainty categories, with deterministic and probabilistic methods and a spreadsheet exercise; commerciality criteria and maturity sub-classes, in the case of a gas discovery; the volumetric, material balance, decline analysis and simulation methods; and reporting, auditing, the relationship with the UNFC (2019 update) and ethics under pressure on the numbers. This course does not qualify you to estimate, certify or audit reserves for official or financial reporting. The course is delivered in Portuguese.

What you will learn

  • Explain what resources and reserves classification is for, who uses it and the principles of the PRMS.
  • Classify volumes as reserves, contingent resources and prospective resources and calculate the chance of commerciality.
  • Calculate uncertainty categories in a simple exercise, distinguishing deterministic and probabilistic methods and the aggregation rules.
  • Assess the commerciality and maturity of a project and changes of class.
  • Choose the estimation method suited to the stage of the field.
  • Compare the PRMS with the UNFC and explain reserves reporting and auditing, including the response to undue pressure.
